It seems obvious, but is notable because we've seen recent suggestions that Brandon Jackson and Montario Hardesty could rotate in. When the Browns get to training camp, the skill level between Richardson and the other two isn't even going to be close. Jackson may enter the game on some third downs as a blitz-protection specialist, but Richardson should flirt with 325-350 touches.

"I think that's probably fair to say," Shurmur said. The Browns beat writers -- and Rotoworld -- expect Richardson to be one of the few workhorse backs in the league. Whereas Adrian Peterson entered the 2007 season as a fourth- or fifth-round fantasy pick behind Chester Taylor, Richardson should garner legitimate first-round consideration.

Brandon Jackson might replace Richardson on especially obvious passing downs because he's also refined in pass protection. Either way, Richardson's 2012 workload won't be an issue. We like him as a rock-solid first-round fantasy pick.

Per Mort, the arthroscopic procedure is "tentatively scheduled," although it sounds pretty inevitable. The surgery will "clean up loose particles of cartilage," and is Richardson's second scope in the past six months. While the procedure sounds minor in nature and surely will be billed as such by the Browns, it confirms that Richardson essentially suffered a setback. We'll have more news on a potential return timeline soon, but Richardson can be expected to miss the entire preseason. His early-season workload is now a major concern. Richardson is no longer a recommended first- or second-round fantasy pick.

Next Wednesday will be August 29, 11 days before the Browns' September 9 opener against Philadelphia. While we suspect Richardson will be active for that game, his workload will be extremely dicey. The Browns' usage of Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson will be worth tracking in Friday night's third preseason game. Hardesty could be an early-season drain on Richardson's early-down usage. Jackson could wind up handling all passing-game work.

"As a coaching staff and as an organization you have to be really smart ... we can't rush him back in before he's ready." The thinking here indicates the Browns are going to play it safe with Richardson early in the season, regardless of whether or not he's active for games. That's a pretty big fantasy concern. Richardson will be more of a low-end RB2/flex option as opposed to the RB1/2 he would've been pre-surgery.

Richardson has resumed running, and coach Pat Shurmur remains "very optimistic" he'll be ready for next Sunday's opener. "If he's ready to play, he will," Shurmur said. The big test will come on Wednesday, when the Browns get in their first official practice of the regular season. Richardson will have to at least be limited to have a realistic chance of suiting up against the Eagles.

It's Richardson's first practice of any kind since his early-August scope. Per beat writer Scott Petrak, Richardson didn't run full speed, but did individual and team drills, caught some passes, and took some handoffs all with a sleeve on his left knee. The practice is a good sign, but the true test will be how Richardson bounces back and what kind of session he's able to get in during Wednesday's first official practice. Richardson will likely be listed as questionable on Friday, but we expect him to be available for a limited role against the Eagles.

As it's shaping up at mid-week, however, this backfield has no clear-cut fantasy starter for Week 1 versus the Eagles.

Richardson has experienced no setbacks or swelling during his rehab. He's going to take some "thumping" during Thursday's practice, a sure sign that he'll start against the Eagles. However, we're expecting a limited workload in a game the Browns could fall behind in early. Richardson is a weak RB2 option for Week 1.

Coach Pat Shurmur confirmed that the Browns are working with Trent Richardson on a goal of making him a true every-down back.

Richardson missed the entire preseason, so he opened the season as a two-down back who left the field in favor of Chris Ogbonnaya in passing situations. Richardson has 15 receptions over his past three games, though, and his role is growing. "It would make sense to keep Trent on the field the whole game," Shurmur acknowledged. "And at some point, he'll be able to."
